Microsoft’s share price is down 9% year on year, as although everybody was told it’s the beginning of the next Industrial Revolution, it hasn’t actually happened and instead we’ve just collectively flushed the planet down the toilet.

@GossiTheDog It's finally dawning on them that no one wants this crap.

@GossiTheDog At least we flushed it with the most useless technologies of all time at scale. Slow databases and randomised autocompletion 👍

@GossiTheDog I'm cautiously optimistic that "people" are starting to figure out that "AI" bullshit machines are, in fact, bullshit machines and that the "AI revolution" is just another Oligarch approved pump-and-dump scheme to rob the "poors" and take over the government. 😫

@GossiTheDog so the darned naysayers were right all along? If only it had been obvious.

@GossiTheDog pretty good management to hit the brakes before the bubble pops. Would have expected them to only react after the pop.

@FlorianTischner yeah. They’re still, I think, way over committed on AI - I think it’s over $100bn budgeted - but Amy Hood has got to get them to be realistic and pump the breaks to derisk it, which hasn’t happened yet.

I can say for sure Copilot in M365 will sell to large enterprises for the Teams annotation, but Copilot for Security is ten times more expensive than practical and almost all the other initiatives won’t sell I suspect. For home consumers, it’s basically dead in the water.

@GossiTheDog @FlorianTischner

I already gave my Copilot license back, so I could switch to Teams Premium.

Also, I am smiling every time Lokka, the MCP created by a Microsoft employee, seems to outperform Copilot for Security as a free and open source plugin. I think the proposition of Copilot for Security is nice, but the costs are way, way too much.

@jtig @GossiTheDog @FlorianTischner Well, I only have W10 Pro, and uninstalled Copilot, OnDrive, and more crap.
Apparenly W10 Pro is going to be my last version of Windooze as MS promised with the lauch of W10.....

Update: My W2000 on a Compaq EN6266 upgraded to 400MHz with the full 3x128MB RAM and a 320GB disk still runs when necessary..

@GossiTheDog @FlorianTischner if I were making an informed guess, it’d be that a non-insubstantial portion of the ML hardware investment on Azure is going to go to the US government inside the govcloud boundary for agency projects. The government is slow to hop off these fads because of the same management tendencies you’re already thinking of.

I’m personally aware of agencies that are still all-in on LLM and ML pipe dreams.

@GossiTheDog

Please, someone add New Zealand to the list of canned Microsoft data-centres.

@GossiTheDog

Part of me is curious why this is happening.

The ration answer is simple; AI is a moneypit and at this rate it will never be profitable given the resources sunk into it.

However, tech companies have shown they are anything but rational, so I wonder what reason they use to scale back.

@GossiTheDog This bit of press seems to over state (overly negatively?) what is going on. A more accurate statement might reflect the following:

"While April 3 brought announcements about new projects, no new pullbacks were disclosed. The recent cancellations appear part of ongoing portfolio optimization rather than a wholesale retreat from AI infrastructure."

AI like every business goes from Boom Growth to consolidation. I suspect the field is beginning to consolidate.

@GossiTheDog Why would anyone build a power hungry thing in the UK? Our electricity prices are crazy high!

@Dss @GossiTheDog For consumers, yes. I bet not for corps, though.

@mike @GossiTheDog business electricity rates are far lower, yes, but still higher than other countries who do the exact same, but with lower initial rates.

@mike @GossiTheDog I have a friend who knows this stuff inside out, as well. He rants about it on occasion! And I spent years working in the industry. A lot of pubs closed down, as electricity went from 5p to 15p, and beyond. Consumer rates are 3x that.

@GossiTheDog In his podcast Ed Zitron noted MSFT were cutting back -and as the provider of OpenAI compute, the cloud where developers running against OpenAI would want to be -and with Copilot the largest operator of "production" AI -this makes for a good metric for the success/utility value of AI in general

@GossiTheDog
Microsoft has been quietly backing away from OpenAI for some time.

@GossiTheDog Excellent news! More of this, please!

@GossiTheDog Do you know what we call this? A good start.

@GossiTheDog Most AI stuff is a scam so less pollution.
