Google layoffs today were unexpected and weird.
Most folks found out via SMS or news. There's no list of affected people, so everyone's just DMing each other. One of my good friends and teammates was laid off despite being an outstanding performer and a team player who was leading a 5-year transformative project. Everyone was blindsided up to *at least* our skip-level. My product is having a sitewide meeting with, shall we say, more whiskey than usual.
As I said... unexpected and weird.
I've been impressed by the community support. Laid off Googlers have created a Discord server (>5k members already!) to support each other. On-corp, everyone is looking out for everyone else's mental health. Nobody's getting much work done today.
