Tonight I had the realization that I enjoy self-hosting so much is because I’m trying to catch that high we got from technology during the 2000’s and some of the 2010’s.
When getting into the guts of software was as much learning how things worked to become proficient, as it was a pleasant experience because the software respected the user, came with real manuals, and may even encourage you to hack on it. It felt like a technological social contract, I guess I would call it.

Self-hosting brings that feeling back. Solid software, built by real humans, tended to like a garden, engages with the community. What a breath of fresh air when I compare it to a lot of the websites and apps that are complete slop, tweaked for SEO, tweaked to encourage monitization, etc etc basically the #enshittification of the web.

Find an open source project that you use everyday and go see if that developer needs donations. If they don’t, try the next one. Give back to the people that give us so much. Especially when so much is on the line these days.
