Can we just take a moment to appreciate that Mark Zuckerberg has managed to shit in his own bed so badly in the past few weeks that fediverse image app Pixelfed, made by one person in their spare time, has managed to rise far above Instagram on the App Store?

@GossiTheDog I also want to take a moment to remember that Threads only looked really popular for a moment because if you already had Instagram, they were shoveling you in that direction as much as they could, and the only people who were all "this is so great!" were people who need to sell you stuff online.

Whenever extractive capital creates a space for small entrepreneurs it's so they can control it, rent it, and squeeze an ever larger tribute in exchange for increasingly conditional access.
Not sure what the plan B is, but for sure plan A was always extractive capital's plan, not ours.

As a 45-year business journalist, I get coagulated hearing people say "small business is the backbone of our economy." The fact is, big business and small business employ equal numbers and generate taxes equally (it varies from decade to decade), so they are backbone-brothers. Hooray for small biz, hooray for big biz.
@gettingcomputey @GossiTheDog They're doing a lot to herd Instagram users to Threads, too. I find Threads is dominated by "the algorithm" which makes it actually a lot harder to use. Also makes its notifications absolutely useless.

I honestly am surprised his stuff hasn't collapsed.
I mean this with absolutely no ill will or slam against him, but that is a lot of fucking traffic, and I remember the days when being linked just to a simple web server on slashdot would completely take it down- and this is orders of magnitude more.

@GossiTheDog I think one lesson is that there is very little value to the Facebookj/Meta platforms that is not easily replaced, if people are agitated enough for a few weeks.

Meta products have been in decline for a while now.
I'm told facebook is becoming unusable, threads never really got going and Instagram seems to be an adverts platform with a user or two.
The Metaverse seems have been a place for zuck to hide and with his introduction of AI personalities to the other platforms it just cofirms my thoughts about him not being a 'people' person and really wanting to live in another world.

@GossiTheDog @slothrop I feel that no one really likes Instagram, but there just wasn't a viable alternative that grabbed enough people's attention until now.
My wife uses Instagram both personally and to promote her art/crafts. She hates it. She hates the algorithm. She hates that she has lots of followers but hardly any of them are shown her work.

@GossiTheDog I wish this was more than just a blip in his radar, though. He's about to be handed the execution of TikTok by his new bff in the White House. And that has been the long game for ages now. While he used to cry about government overreach, he now has convinced them to kill the only thing that offers any real competition. It's fucking bullshit. Mastodon didn't hurt Twitter, PixelFed won't hurt Instagram. Sadly, it's but a scrape. Throw rocks. Burn shit down.

@GossiTheDog I detest Zuckerberg and his ilk, the same with Facebook, Twitter and all that shit. My only consolation is that these people have to look themselves in the mirror each day and *know* they’re a chump that’s despised by millions for what they’ve done, and that they’ve sold their soul to the devil for a few bucks
@GossiTheDog I wish I could figure out create an account on pixelfed. I feel very stupid but it just asks for a server and login. No idea what to enter. I’m posting this because I fear others oldsters are having the same issue but any help would be welcome.
@GossiTheDog It's been well documented that Zuck literally shit the bed after eating a full bag of Gardein vegetarian meatballs. They had to call a local junk removal service to take the entire bed and some of the flooring out of his home. This all happened the same week that they stopped fact checking!
